Woman Buys a Bank Building, Transforms It To Her New Home
When a former bank teller quits her job at the National Bank of Spring City in Spring City, PA 20 years ago, she wouldn’t thought that she would come back at the bank, buy the building and claim it as her new home, literally!
After the bank closed down in 1989, Cathy Calhoun received call from her former boss and told her that the bank building is up for sale. Calhoun was told that the building is perfect for her jewelry business but because of the location, she thought that the building would be better suited for something else: her home.
After paying for the bank building, Calhoun then started working for the interior transformation. She carefully and artistically incorporated some of the bank’s original features and treasures into the décor. She preserves the majority of original layout while creating 3-bedrooms, 3-bathrooms and one special room found in the basement.
The 5,200 square foot building was originally built in 1872. In its years as a bank, it printed over $3 million of national currency, some of which can be found in the hands of collectors today. The exterior of the building is completely authentic, including its clock.
If given the chance to do, will you buy and live in a bank building too?
OMG I have seen this video – it is a MUST watch! What she did with this place is BEYOND transformed YET she managed to keep everything true to its nature and design. I so want to live here! Gorgeous!
Wow, good for her. I think that is a great idea and she clearly worked hard to make it her own.
What a novel idea to do! I love how she made her dream come true! I wonder if there was any hidden money in the walls! lol
What an interesting idea and it really came out wonderfully. She even has the vailt still in the basement where she can store the excess jewelry from her business!
That’s awesome that the zoning was right for her. I imagine it’s got a cool effect that’s hard to beat. 🙂
Wow, I absolutely love it. Not all homes have to be cookie cutter, this one certainly is not!
I am always impressed with people that have the visuals in their mind to be able to do this. I would always see it as a bank and would not be able to transform it into a home (in my mind). She did a wonderful job and it looks amazing! <3 Christine, The Choosy Mommy, http://www.choosykids.blogspot.com
Wow, so awesome talk about feeling like rolling into money. Great story and video
I don’t know if I would take on that endeavor – but the house looks really cool. That door – wow – who wouldn’t love that in their house!
That is sooo cool! I would love to convert a building like that to a home.
The community art center that I work for is in an old bank building and we love it!! I love how she worked to make it her own special place!!
What a cool looking home. I love the outside and the inside as it’s so unusual.
oh wow how awesome is that, she had definitely done an incredible job and looks so beautiful
I love it! I love that show You Live in What? It is so cool seeing how they transform old buildings into homes.
What an interesting home! I am not one for those cookie-cutter homes so I love this!
What a neat article! Many years ago, my husband rented an apartment in Spring City.
I loved the way you kept a lot of the “bank character” with your new place. I would love to see more pictures of the vault door and the special basement room.
What a creative adventure, thanks for sharing!
What an inspiring story. It is great to see what people can accomplish when they have clear goals and work hard to follow through.
Whoa, the house looks awesome! I love places that have character, and this one surely does! Kudos to her, it looks so cozy and homey with touches of style.
Good grief, this is one beautiful home. The woman certaintly knew how to decorate, didn’t she?! See – this is exactly how I’d love to have my home look. Soo so pretty – and the STORY behind it. Just wild. ILove it
That is pretty cool. I love how she kept some of the bank’s interior features when transforming it into her home. She has great taste!
Wow. That is kind of cool. I never would think to do something like this but if it works, sounds awesome!
I love stories like this one. My parents very nearly but a century old fire station many years ago and I so wish that they had been able to do so. What’s more fun than repurposing on such a grand scale?
Her hard work paid off because it turned out beautiful. Good for her to make it her home.
That’s such a big project, wow! It ended up looking really cool! I love how they kept some of the signature bank fixtures.
I would never think of living in a former bank building, but what she did was awesome. The house looks really nice.
How awesome! I can’t imagine that this was once a bank building! I love how she kept most of the interior intact and just found some creative ways to work around it.
That sounds like something straight off of that show, “You Live In What?” I think it comes on HGTV or something like that. The people on that show make homes out of the strangest places, like a former firehouse or a water treatment plant. A former bank would fit right in.
This is so cool! I love the bank vault pictures. I would love an eclectic home like this.
Wow this is so interesting! I love how creative she was with décor and design. Very clever but I don’t think that would be safe in my country…
I love seeing stories like this. She’s really creative, I love her new home and her decoration.
Such a neat concept! I would love to live there, or even just to go and visit. Older style buildings are so unique.
Oh WOW what a beautiful transformation! The place looks magnificent, I love the Vault! LOL Who could have a vault as big as that? I love it, what a beautiful home. She did a very amazing job!
This house is so cool! It’s a nice house and has a great story to go along with it….very unique.
I saw something like this on HGTV in Dubuque, Iowa. So cool how resourceful people are!
I’ve seen several old building made into homes and restaurants. It was fun sitting in the vault for a private dining time.
I have to admit that if I had the money I would do the same thing she did with and old hotel here in my hometown. It has always been just a dream of mine since a little girl. The first time I entered it I was about three years old when my aunt and uncle had their wedding reception in the what was the ball room. Thanks for sharing.
OMG, this is amazing! I would definitely live in an awesome, interesting place like this! I love seeing these homes that were once hospitals or libraries; now a bank. So cool!
That is certainly a cool idea. What a very unique space
Oh wow, I can see why she feels like a Queen. I would love to live in there, and I would’ve loved going through everything. She had to have a great time. I know I would have. wow, Thanks for sharing!
