5 Amazing Bridges in Grand Rapids Michigan That You Must See!
If you are searching for beautiful destinations and amazing attractions in Michigan, Grand Rapids is certainly one of the places to be. From historic buildings and state of the art facilities up to amazing work of arts, fine architecture and museums, Grand Rapids, Michigan has it all!
Grand Rapids is also quite popular for its picturesque man-made bridges. Below are some of the best covered and urban bridges that are certainly worth the visit.
Ada Covered Bridge
The Ada Covered Bridge is a 125-foot (38 m) span Brown truss covered bridge erected in 1867 in Ada, Michigan. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge is open only to pedestrian traffic and connects the Village of Ada on one side of the Thornapple River with a park on the other side. It is maintained by the Kent County Park system.
Fallasburg Covered Bridge
Fallasburg Bridge (alternatively Fallassburgh Bridge) is a 100-foot (30 m) span Brown truss covered bridge, erected in 1871 in Vergennes Township, Michigan. The Fallasburg Covered Bridge was listed with the Michigan State Register on February 12, 1959. It was awarded a Michigan Historical Marker on September 10, 1971. The bridge was then listed with the National Register on March 16, 1972.
The picturesque setting of Fallasburg Park displays Fallasburg Covered Bridge to perfection. Its rural location and quality construction contributed to its survival during a time when old covered bridges were being destroyed to make way for new road construction. The bridge remains open to vehicular traffic. Webpage.
Bowen’s Mill Bridge
The covered bridge at Historic Bowen’s Mills in Delton is located to the south of the mill structure. It was designed by the first generation miller, Neal H. Cook and is a quaint scale replica of the covered bridge that crossed the Thornapple River in Middleville years ago. It was built in 1982 out of wood that was donated from the old Middleville Mill that was torn down at that time. The awesome beauty of the 17 foot water wheel and the 1864 Grist Mill can be viewed from the bridge. Webpage.
Blue Bridge
The Blue Bridge stretches across the Grand River with access points next to GVSU’s Eberhard Center and the Grand Rapids River walk near Plaza Towers. The bridge was originally constructed in 1892 as a railroad bridge, but now has been converted into a pedestrian walk. The Blue Bridge is iconic to the city and is the one of the longest truss bridges in Michigan. Webpage.
Fulton Street Bridge
Michigan’s second largest concrete arch bridge retains much of its historical integrity. It runs parallel to downtown’s Pearl Street Bridge over the Grand River. Fulton Street is a primary artery through town making the bridge a major connection between the West Side and the East Side of the City. It is also a regular site for Fishing in the City.
